News

Welcome to REALTV’s first newsletter of 2009.

This quarterly newsletter will enable REALTV to keep in touch throughout the year with teachers, young people and industry providing you with regular updates regarding our upcoming projects.

A NOTE FROM THE CREATIVE DIRECTORS

2008 was a mammoth year for REALTV. After a highly successful tour of Hoods to the Sydney Opera House and regional Victoria, we presented the work to an international audience at the ASSITEJ International Festival of Young People in Adelaide.

REALTV received a six month funded fellowship from the State Library of Victoria which includes an office space in the library. We are so at home in this beautiful building, that the library security may need to forcibly remove us at the end of the fellowship.

2009 looks set to become a mammoth year as well, with two remounts and two new works in development.

WAR CRIMES
COMMISSIONED BY SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE AND REGIONAL ARTS VICTORIA

Following the success of our multi-award winning play, Hoods REALTV is currently developing a new work under commission from the Sydney Opera House and Regional Arts Victoria. War Crimes is a controversial new work continuing REALTV’s trademark fusion of living newspaper, physical performance, electronic music and new writing. Based on the true story of five girls who desecrated a war memorial with anti-war slogans on the eve of ANZAC day, War Crimes will explore themes of war, patriotism and freedom.

As part of the development of this work, REALTV conducted two weekend workshops with young people aged 15-25 at the Footscray Community Arts Centre in late November.  It is anticipated this group of young artists will form an ongoing consultative committee who will guide the development of the project over the next year.

ONE NIGHT THE DEAD
SUPPORTED BY ARTS VICTORIA AND STATE LIBRARY OF VICTORIA

 http://www.stanford.edu/~grg/images/melb/state_library_3.jpg

REALTV is developing a futuristic Location Based Game with the support of a creative fellowship from the State Library of Victoria.   One Night the Dead is a new work for young audiences inspired by Peter Carey's short story, Do You Love Me? Exploring themes of love, neglect, greed and memory, as well as the war on terror and climate change, One Night the Deadforecasts a future dystopia that must be saved by the players of the game, before history itself disappears. When complete, One Night the Dead will be an interactive, site-specific performance in several instalments, utilising accessible technology (mobile phones, GPS and the internet) and linked by game structures, tactics and conventions. As part of the creative development process the Real TV team devised and presented a series of happenings in and around the State library of Victoria in early December 08.  REALTV is also thrilled to announce their successful funding application from Arts Victoria to develop this concept further in June 2009. Stay tuned for further updates.
